Supportive housing welcomed in every neighbourhood

Supportive housing welcomed in every neighbourhood

What I heard

Participants were frustrated that stigma and neighbourhood opposition can delay or block supportive housing. They wanted elected leaders to explain the value of these homes clearly and treat supportive housing as part of a healthy community.

Why it matters

People who need support also need safe homes connected to transit, services and community life. Concentrating or excluding supportive housing can deepen isolation and make suitable sites even harder to secure.

What I learned...

The discussion showed that building housing is only part of the challenge. Public understanding, political leadership and respectful neighbourhood engagement can determine whether needed projects move forward.
Jurisdiction notes
Council controls municipal planning and development decisions and can shape how the City communicates and consults about housing proposals. Projects must still comply with provincial planning and human-rights requirements, and supportive services often depend on provincial health and housing funding.
