Municipal decisions shaped by equity and lived experience

Municipal decisions shaped by equity and lived experience

What I heard

A participant wanted City budgets, bylaws and plans to show how decisions affect low-income residents, disabled people, newcomers and others who face barriers.

Why it matters

A policy that appears neutral can create very different outcomes depending on a resident’s income, disability, housing or access to information. Considering those effects early can prevent avoidable barriers.

What I learned...

This contribution focused on the method of decision-making rather than one service. It called for equity and lived experience to be considered before decisions are finalized, not added as an afterthought.
Jurisdiction notes
Council directly approves municipal budgets, bylaws, plans, consultation processes and many service policies. Municipal decisions must also comply with provincial and federal law, including accessibility and human-rights requirements.
