Health-led responses to mental health crises

Health-led responses to mental health crises

What I heard

Participants wanted people experiencing a mental health crisis to be met first with appropriate health and crisis support rather than an enforcement response. They pointed to co-response work as a direction worth expanding.

Why it matters

A crisis response can shape whether a person receives care, experiences additional trauma or becomes involved in the justice system. The responder needs the training and authority appropriate to the situation.

What I learned...

Participants were not asking one service to manage every crisis alone. Their vision depended on coordinated protocols that bring health, crisis, emergency and public-safety partners together.
Jurisdiction notes
Mental-health care is primarily provincial, while policing, paramedicine, fire and local emergency services operate under different governance structures. Council can support partnerships and consider municipal funding, but it cannot direct individual police operations or replace provincial health services.
