Enough income to live with dignity

Enough income to live with dignity

What I heard

Participants repeatedly described a Peterborough where everyone has enough income for rent, food and other basic needs. Many connected this vision directly to Basic Income and to income supports that reflect the actual cost of living.

Why it matters

When income does not cover basic needs, residents are forced to make harmful trade-offs between housing, food, medication, transportation and participation in community life.

What I learned...

This vision appeared across all three sessions. Participants treated adequate income as a foundation that affects housing stability, food security, health and the ability to participate in the community.
Jurisdiction notes
Income-support rates and any Basic Income program are primarily provincial or federal responsibilities. The City administers Ontario Works locally and can improve access to local benefits, subsidies, referrals and services, consider the effects of municipal fees, and advocate to other governments.
