Dignity in every emergency response

Dignity in every emergency response

What I heard

A participant described witnessing or experiencing stigma toward people who are homeless or use drugs. Their vision was for every interaction with first responders to begin with dignity, regardless of a person’s circumstances.

Why it matters

People are more likely to seek help and cooperate with responders when they expect to be treated fairly. Stigma can deepen mistrust and make already dangerous situations harder to resolve.

What I learned...

This contribution was a reminder that service quality is measured not only by response time or outcome, but also by how people are treated during a vulnerable moment.
Jurisdiction notes
Responsibility is shared among municipal fire and emergency services, police and police governance, paramedic services, health agencies and the Province. Council can influence municipal policies, budgets, training priorities and partnerships, but does not direct every service or individual response.
