An affordable and resilient local food system

An affordable and resilient local food system

Heard on: July 23, 2026
Source: Community Event

What I heard

Participants imagined protected food-producing land, thriving markets and gardens, more local processing and packaging, and less dependence on distant supply chains.

Why it matters

A strong local food system supports access to food, local livelihoods and resilience when transportation, prices or global supply chains are disrupted.

What I learned...

Participants connected household affordability with land use and economic development. Producing more food locally does not by itself make food affordable; incomes, distribution and access also matter.
Jurisdiction notes
The City can support urban agriculture, markets, community gardens, local procurement, economic development and land-use policies within city boundaries. Much of the surrounding farmland is governed by Peterborough County and local townships under provincial planning rules, while farm policy and income supports involve other governments.
