Affordable public spaces, recreation and culture

Affordable public spaces, recreation and culture

Heard on: June 25, 2026
Source: Community Event

What I heard

Participants envisioned affordable or free recreation, more outdoor gathering places, community centres and visible support for music, art and shared civic life.

Why it matters

Parks, recreation and culture create opportunities for health, creativity and connection. Fees, transportation barriers or a lack of welcoming spaces can exclude residents from community life.

What I learned...

Participants spoke about recreation, public space and the arts as parts of the same vision: a city where people can gather and participate regardless of income.
Jurisdiction notes
The City directly operates and supports many parks, recreation programs, cultural facilities, public spaces, subsidies and community grants. Community organizations, artists, schools and other governments also contribute facilities, programming and funding.
